What do the different dialects of Chinese sound like?

I love looking into dialectal variation. Languages can be so varied and it is awesome to see all the different ways they can do things. Tonal languages are quite interesting in that they all developed from non tonal languages. At one point, Chinese languages lost final consonants, so the only way to distinguish syllables was through tone, and thus a tonal language was born.
