How similar are Japanese and Korean?

Japanese and Korean share many features, such as a similar linguistic typology. They are both agglutinative languages, but Japanese displays some fusional aspects and they both have complex politeness systems. They are very similar in a lot of ways which is why some people think they may have once been mutually intelligible, or at least they may come from the same linguistic ancestor. But if they did come from the same language, they split off a long time ago.
