Every language has a different set of words it uses to describe the world. No language matches another language exactly one word to one word. A word in one language might translate to many words in another, and the reverse is also true. An interesting example is from German where “kennen” means to “recognise” or “to know” someone as in “I know him well”, but German uses “wissen” to refer to knowing a fact. Each language divides up the world into different pieces and this can give us a very interesting different view of the world.
