English is a Germanic language. It may not seem so at first since it has so many Romance derived words in it, but it is derived from the same older language as German, Dutch and Swedish. English’s ancestor was spoken by the Saxons who moved to England. They mixed with Jutes and Angles and over time English diverged from how Saxons on main land Europe spoke.
